Tree Volume Calculator

With this calculator, you can calculate the volume of a single tree. The calculator is based on Laasasenaho's (1982) volume equations using two parameters. Enter the breast height diameter 𝑑1.3 in centimeters and the tree height ℎ in meters. The calculator will provide the result in cubic meters and, more precisely, in cubic decimeters.

Equations used by the calculator:
Pine: v = 0.036089 * d2.01395 * (0.99676)d * h2.07025 * (h-1.3)(-1.07209)
Spruce: v = 0.022927 * d1.91505 * (0.99146)d * h2.82541 * (h-1.3)(-1.53547)
Birch: v = 0.011197 * d2.10253 * (0.98600)d * h3.98519 * (h-1.3)(-2.65900)

The calculator does not include equations based on Laasasenaho's one- or three-parameter models. Calculations based on one parameter have a mean error of around 17-18%, so considering measurement errors, the result would not be very reliable. The three-parameter model includes the upper diameter 𝑑6, but determining the upper diameter is practically challenging and can, in the worst case, reduce the result's accuracy. Even with this two-parameter calculation, it is important to note that the accuracy of the results decreases when calculating for young trees or over-sized trunks (𝑑1.3 > 50 cm).

The mean error means that, for example, with a 5% mean error, the true result deviates from the calculated result by no more than ±5% with a probability of 68.3% and by no more than ±10% with a probability of 95.4%. The given mean errors are valid when 𝑑1.3 is measured to the nearest millimeter and ℎ to the nearest decimeter.
